Case Study 5: From Sub-Sahara Africa to the U.S. – an Arts Journey
It’s common to consider how U.S. and European organizations – (and increasingly Asian organizations, too) can and should expand across borders. It’s not as common to hear stories of African expansion internationally. Principal Patricia Shafer served as strategic advisor to a non-profit arts organization in sub-Saharan Africa as it imagined its first foray into the U.S. market. The initiative began with a strategy to engage a target audience of U.S. arts leaders who would support the arts organization as a unique contributor to global diversity and cultural awareness. It continued with shaping of a first-ever high-profile arts tour for the organization in North America, which received widespread recognition with the media and public officials. The initiative’s impact prompted organization founders to pursue a strategy of U.S. support for a multi-media arts initiative that will span several countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Patricia continues to work with the organization to shape its future strategy and plans, including building a network of funders and supporters. |
